NCG garden manager Steve Smith brings you an introduction to agricultural techniques based on natural ecosystems and traditional methods of home gardening in tropical areas.

Forest gardens create a system of inter-planted perennial and self-seeding crops which can provide an abundant yield over many years. The principles of forest gardening can be successfully applied in backyards, small acreages, orchards and farms.

Topics covered will include: food forests in different climates, with a particular focus on the subtropics; useful plant species; starting a food forest; and managing a food forest at different stages of development.

The workshop will be set at the community gardens which are a living example of a food forest in its early stages.
